Ace the Curly Girl Method with Clever Curl

Having curly hair can sometimes feel like a curse when it should be a blessing. However, you can do wonders with curls and feel fantastic if you have the proper techniques and products.

That was certainly recognised by stylist Lorraine Massey when she penned her book, Curly Girl: The Handbook. The idea is to follow a simple hair care routine to find the products and applications that work best with your hair.
There’s no magic formula because everybody with curls is different, but you can make the most of your curls while reducing frizz, dryness, and breakage with a bit of trial and error and some guidance. Here are the four main steps of the Curly Girl Method.

The ‘Reset’ Wash

It’s essential to make sure your hair is immaculate, so we do something called the final ‘reset’ wash. This involves using a sulphate-filled clarifying shampoo, not just any old product off the shelf. This removes all silicone build-up in your hair. If you use a product with silicone or wax, you can start again with this step at any time.

Cleanse Your Hair

Find a curl-friendly cleansing conditioner or sulphate-filled shampoo for your regular clean (this is in addition to the reset wash). It’s important to massage your scalp for at least 60 seconds during this step before you rinse out.

Conditioning

Choose a curl-friendly conditioner and use a large handful on the bottom half of your hair. It should be well covered, feeling slimy. Once saturated, detangle with your fingers or a large-tooth comb. You can now rinse out again, but don’t rinse all of the conditioners away.

Work On Your Style

Now it’s time to style your hair. There are so many ways you can do this, so use whichever method you prefer. For beginners, it’s worth trying first with some curl-friendly styling gel and scrunches a big handful into your hair. It’s all about layering and squishing those products into your wet hair.

Dry Your Hair

You can dry your hair a number of ways, but air-drying is preferable. Alternatively, use a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel to cup and lightly scrunch the hair to remove excess water.
Once your hair is dehydrated, play around with your hair a bit, scrunching it to remove the gel coating of your styling products. And you’re done!
